SWALLOW ME WHOLE is out!! eek!

hello! well, i most excitedly declare that Swallow Me Whole debuted at SPX this past weekend, and it smells great. and feels really good too. I also should awkwardly declare that it won an Ignatz Award for "Outstanding Debut"! The precious brick sleeps beside me nightly, swaddled in blankets. Thank you everyone for the kindness!

*Next week I'm screen-printing (with the technical and logistical aid of my feathered friends Crystal and Kieth) some posters for Swallow Me Whole. I'll get the design up soon, and there'll be some available to order as well, if you're interested!

*On my fall travels I'll have a small-print run of a few comics stories: the comic is called Cakewalk, and the title story is written by one Rachel Bormann (this story will be featured in our forthcoming comics collection..). There's another story in there that's an interpretive version of the Pretty Girls Make Graves song "The Get-Away." I'll also have a few copies of this available for mailorder to boot!

*I'm working on a bunch of illustrations for Michael Hoerger's forthcoming book Edible Secrets, due out next year from Microcosm Publishing! The book covers a hidden history of covert CIA and executive operations filtered through the context of food. Bizarre, shocking, hilarious, and terrifying.

*The forthcoming Top Shelf book formerly known as Voglio Capirlo is now Any Empire. It'll likely be finished at the end of 2009, and released in the latter half of 2010.

Hey y’all! Welcome to the Featherweight-Zone. I'm Nate Powell.

So here’s what’s happening on the comic book front:

  • In late September, the 216-page hardcover Swallow Me Whole will be out on Top Shelf Productions!
  • I’m working on a one-shot, 56-page short story comic written by Rachel Bormann. Still no title yet. One story down, three to go, publisher still unknown. More news as the leaves begin to fall.
  • I just started work on a new 136-page graphic novel for Top Shelf called Voglio Capirlo. It’s about fear, paranoia, and racism as elements of control in a culture of distrust. It’s about all people being expendable for the State’s purposes of maintaining control. It’s also about fighting to reclaim faith in humankind and in yourself amidst toxic surroundings. This will be released sometime in 2010.
  • I’m also starting on a 96-page graphic novel for Microcosm called Wreckage. This is a book about traveling, eating, sleeping, and adventuring with Soophie Nun Squad. This puppy will likely be released at the end of 2009.
  • If I could just get the script in the mail, I’ll be drawing a full-color story written by Chris Stevens for his Dream Compass anthology comic, featuring stuff by Art Adams, James Jean, Farel Dalrymple, and Jae Lee. I’m excitedly checking my mailbox!
  • Co-writer Nathan Wilson and I are hard at work on an otherworldly dystopic adventure book called OVOO, which will be either a five-issue series or a graphic novel. More info later in the year!
  • Erin Tobey and I are still someday collaborating on a one-shot comic called You Don’t Say, in which we trade writing and drawing chores on each other’s stories. More info on that by year’s end!
  • I’m tentatively drawing a graphic novel biography of pioneering soul singer Sam Cooke, written by Chris Stevens and edited by Jason Rodriguez. This should be solidifying in the coming months. More info soon.
