'SAVE IT FOR LATER'-- new expanded paperback edition out today!

Today marks the release of a new, expanded paperback edition of Eisner Award-nominated Save It for Later, with 16 new pages of post-2020 conversation between Derf Backderf and myself (including citations), a recommended reading list of work which informed or influenced my book, some creative process images of formative thumbnail and script, and more.

You can learn more and order through many outlets here, or you can order via Bookshop, IndieBound, Powell’s, Barnes & Noble, or Amazon here.

If you’re in Indiana tomorrow (August 10th), I’ll be having a book-launch discussion with Erin Tobey moderating, followed by a signing— Morgenstern Books (849 S. Auto Mall Rd.) at 6:30 pm. See you there!

Bloomington-- SAVE IT FOR LATER book talk & signing, August 10th!

I’ll be doing a local book talk/signing for the new expanded paperback edition of my Eisner Award-nominated Save It For Later on Wednesday, August 10th at 6:30pm— in conversation with national treasure, musician, artist, and Hopscotch Coffee co-owner Erin Tobey!

We’ll be at Morgenstern Books (849 S. Auto Mall Rd.)— bring or buy copies of any of my other books as well, and I’m happy to sign & sketch in them. Thanks— spread the word and I’ll see you there!

new photozine-- PARTING SHOTS #1

PARTING front cover for site.jpg

I’ve always wanted to release a collection of my amateur band photography, so I finally made it happen as a zine— here’s Parting Shots #1, featuring a bunch of photos I took between 1995-2018. This mostly documents underground punk-related bands, but also branches out into a few mainstream artists I’ve had the privilege of seeing. All point-and-shoot, from the hand-me-down 110 camera I started with to my current Sony RX100 II.

Volume One clocks in at a whopping 84 pages, and I expect to release a second volume in a few months. You can order it here, or in combination with Fluke #17 here. This is a super-limited release, and I doubt I’ll make more than 100 copies total.

TWO DEAD book release & video of panel discussion!

IMG_9968.jpeg

Thanks to everyone who came out in Little Rock and Bloomington to make the release of TWO DEAD such a success!

Writer Van Jensen and I had a panel discussion (and “Anatomy of a Scene” walk-through) on book release day, moderated by Jay Jennings as a part of Oxford American’s “South Words” series— here is video of the whole thing.

Thanks to everyone who braved the cold and rain last Saturday to grab books from colorist Erin Tobey and me at Vintage Phoenix Comics— Erin and I have worked on-and-off with each other for almost 20 years, and we’re both proud to’ve been a visual team on this book.

You can order signed/sketched copies of any of my books directly from me here.

IMG_9763.jpg

The first shipment of Two Dead has arrived, and the books turned out great!

Gallery 13 will be releasing Two Dead on November 19th (writer Van Jensen and I will be doing a discussion/Q&A/signing on release day in Little Rock, Arkansas, and then colorist Erin Tobey and I will be doing a signing in Bloomington, Indiana at Vintage Phoenix Comics on Saturday, November 23rd).

I’ve already started shipping signed mailorder copies, which means many folks will receive the book before release day— order here.

Now taking direct pre-orders for TWO DEAD, out 11/19/19!

Two_Dead_Rev_1.jpg

My new graphic novel Two Dead (written by Van Jensen, drawn by me, color by Erin Tobey) will be released on November 19th from Gallery 13— if you’d like a signed/sketched copy directly from me, you may order here!

* Due to our evil, fascist regime backing out of an international postal alliance, international shipping has skyrocketed in the last few years, making foreign orders unrealistic— so I’m only taking direct US mailorders. I’m sorry— yet another reason to get this wicked criminal syndicate out of power.

You may also pre-order from your local comics shop, your local indie bookstore, or Amazon here.

Here’s an exclusive excerpt from Oxford American!

TWO DEAD cover reveal and exclusive excerpt!

Two_Dead_Rev_1.jpg

Van Jensen and I are thrilled to unveil the cover of our forthcoming graphic novel Two Dead, which will be released on November 19th by Gallery 13! This cover was a collaboration with graphic designer and friend Chris Ross, who’s worked with me on many of my books over the years.

Over at Paste, check out a few words from Van and I about the book, as well as an exclusive excerpt from the book— this is the first time to show snippets of the finished art, with a color treatment by designer/visual artist/musician Erin Tobey! Erin has also done lots of behind-the-scenes production and design work on my comics, but this is the first time to directly collaborate on the finished art itself, and we’re both so happy with how it’s turned out.

Below are some more panel details from the book— stay tuned for more, and please pre-order the book here at your local comics shop, local indie bookstore, directly from me, or Amazon. Thank you!

MARCH: BOOK THREE signed pre-orders w/ free ERIN TOBEY "Middlemaze" download!

MARCH: BOOK THREE will be debuting at San Diego Comic Con on July 21st, and will be available everywhere on August 2nd!

I'm taking orders NOW for signed mailorder copies directly from me-- and for the rest of the summer, ALL book orders will include a free digital download of the fantastic Erin Tobey's landmark Middlemaze album-- hands-down, the best album of 2016!

Erin is an immensely talented and inspiring creative force, one of the best friends and finest people I've ever known-- she's also been involved with the design and production end of some of my comics work, and is a great cartoonist herself (and for comics trivia, is the person after whom Ruth from Swallow Me Whole is physically modeled). I'm so proud to team up with her on both of our new endeavors, and hope to spread her album far and wide. (If you're interested, she's also made tons of music in the bands Brenda's FriendFull Sun, Vollmar, Fat Shadow, Tammar, Pink Razors, Mt. Gigantic, and Abe Froman.)

You can also get a digital copy directly from Erin here, and order LP/cassette copies from Let's Pretend Records here.

Book orders will be shipping out as soon as the books arrive from the printer in late July. Also debuting at SDCC will be the limited-edition MARCH trilogy slipcase edition-- I won't be selling any copies directly, but you can order them from Top Shelf/IDW here.

Thanks, spread the word, and see you in San Diego! Stay tuned for an updated Team MARCH schedule of events and signings for the rest of the year.

ERIN TOBEY & FULL SUN on Southeast/East Coast tour this week!

If you live between the Gulf Of Mexico and New England, go see Erin Tobey and Full Sun on tour from May 16-25!

Erin Tobey is one of my favorite songwriters in underground music, in addition to being an amazing visual artist and one of my favorite human beings. Over the years she's been a part of Abe Froman, Mt. Gigantic, Pink Razors, Fat Shadow, and sometimes Tammar. She'll have a series of new screenprints available on tour, and is recording a much-anticipated second solo album this year.

Full Sun is the solo endeavor of Jeff Grant (also of The Sands, Fat Shadow, Pink Razors, and Stop It!!), and will be touring as a two-people-and-a-hologram band-- not to be missed! He's got a new cassette and a brand-new 7" for this tour.

Here's the FB event, with the dates posted here too:

New poster by Erin Tobey for Bloomington Sex Salon!

Here's an awesome new poster by versatile drawing-mate Erin Tobey for the first Bloomington Sex Salon, hosted by sex researcher and educator Dr. Debby Herbenick, and featuring Dr. Bryant Paul discussing his research related to the nature and effects of sexually explicit media. It's happening at The Bishop on Sunday, February 17th-- here's the FB page.

Check out more of Erin Tobey's work here, her solo musical project and previous band Fat Shadow, and her label Houseplant Records.

Here's "Piano", a sweet horror short made by Bloomington staples Erin Tobey, David Woodruff, and Addy & Lewis Rogers as part of a local weekend movie challenge!

R.I.P. Fat Shadow; new musical goings-on

This is a quick post in recognition of one of my favorite Bloomington-area bands, Fat Shadow, who recently called it quits. Fat Shadow was a perfect punk-meets-classic rock storm, carved from the spaces where Heart meets X, where Jefferson Airplane meets Dinosaur Jr.

In their time, they managed to release the outstanding Foot Of Love LP, which is available here on vinyl/download and here as a direct download

(Here are a ton of live Fat Shadow photos I took over the years as well.)

In the meantime, definitely check out these jams from its members:

Purple 7 is a new Replacements-meets-Guided By Voices power trio with Chris Mott (Fat Shadow, Door-Keys, Landlord), Will Staler (Defiance Ohio, Landlord), and Patrick Jennings (Hot New Mexicans). They've got an incredible 5-song 12" out now on Let's Pretend Records (and here's the download), and are currently touring as well.

Here's a video for their song "Poison Ivy."

Fat Shadow drummer Jeff Grant (also of Pink Razors and Stop It!!) has a solo band project called Full Sun, with two tapes under his belt, both still available as downloads. I highly recommend the Bare Floor recording! He's also playing guitar and singing in The Sands, a new band featuring folks from Memory Map, Magnolia Electric Co., and Coke Dares, as well as internet cat-celebrity Lil Bub's human caretaker.

Bassist/wailer Erin Tobey is currently in the process of hammering out what will be a stunning second solo album; her classic 2005 debut is still available as an LP here and download here. She is also an accomplished multimedia artist and has recently teamed up musically with Tammar, Vollmar, and one-off Donna Summer cover band Bad Girls.

Vocalist Daun Fields also performs and records as Vera Maleta, and released several albums fronting The Door-Keys. She also has a blog called Crocosmia, chronicling her relationship to magic, growth, and the creative spirit.

Group exhibit at The Owlery in Bloomington!

I'll have some original artwork on display/for sale in a group exhibit at The Owlery (118 W. 6th Street) in Bloomington IN-- the show is in conjunction with this weekend's Plan-It-X Fest, and 15% of the artwork sales will go to benefit Mother Hubbard's Cupboard (an essential public food pantry).

My stuff will be alongside works by Erin Tobey, Ryan Woods, Matt Tobey, Sean Mahan, Chris Clavin, Izzy Jarvis, Megan March Mink, Rich Diem, Emily Timm, Alan Crenshaw, and Rebecca Redman.

The show's opening will be Friday, June 22nd from 11pm-1am, and will remain up until August. The Facebook event page is here.

See you there!
